Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport has always been a hub of activity, connecting millions of passengers to various destinations around the world. With the inauguration of the new Terminal 2 (T2) at Sahar, a fresh and innovative concept has been introduced to Indian airport lounges: airport-owned premium lounges for airline customers. This development marks a shift in how lounges are operated and accessed at one of India's busiest airports.
Previously, T2 housed dedicated lounges for several prominent international airlines, including British Airways and Emirates. These lounges were exclusively managed by the respective airlines, providing a sanctuary for their premium cabin travellers and frequent flyers. However, with the new iteration of T2, the airport authority has taken over the management of these lounges. Now, all airlines pay the airport to bring their guests into a unified premium lounge system.

One of the standout lounges under this new system is the Mumbai West Wing Adani Lounge, formerly known as the GVK Lounge. This lounge has garnered praise for its luxurious amenities, making it a popular choice among travellers seeking comfort and convenience before their flights.
While the new lounge management system has elevated the experience for premium travellers, it has posed challenges for those without elite status or premium cabin tickets. Historically, many international travellers relied on credit card-based lounge access, a benefit that has been significantly curtailed with the new system. The Oberoi-operated Loyalty Lounge remains one of the few options available for credit card holders, thanks to a pre-existing contract that survived the airport's management transition from the Airports Authority of India (AAI) to GVK, and now to Adani.
However, the Loyalty Lounge has not been well-received by many travellers. Its lack of windows and claustrophobic environment have drawn criticism, making it a less appealing option for those looking to relax before their flights.
Recognizing the demand for better facilities for credit card holders, Adani management has introduced a new lounge that offers credit card-based access. This lounge, located in the East Wing of T2, provides a welcome alternative for Visa and RuPay cardholders with eligible cards, both debit and credit. This development is a significant step towards accommodating the needs of a broader range of travellers.
The East Wing lounge was initially created to address overcrowding issues in the West Wing lounges, particularly during the peak operations of Jet Airways, which had a significant number of frequent flyers passing through Mumbai. After the collapse of Jet Airways and the subsequent reduction in demand for the East Wing lounge, it has now been repurposed to cater to credit card customers, much like the Adani Lounge at the Domestic Terminal 2.
For travellers who prefer dining options over lounge access, T2 has introduced a variety of new restaurants and food court options. These additions offer diverse culinary experiences to suit different tastes and preferences. Some of the new dining options include:
Indi Tapas: Located in the Domestic Departure area, Security Hold Area, near Gate 48. This restaurant offers a range of tapas-style dishes.
Dosa Plaza: Situated in the International Departure area, Security Holding Area, near Gate 43, next to McDonald's.
These new dining options typically offer a drink and a meal in exchange for a card swipe, making them convenient choices for travellers looking to grab a quick bite before their flights.
The transformation of Mumbai's T2 lounges marks a new era in airport amenities, focusing on elevating the travel experience for premium passengers while also addressing the needs of credit card holders and general travellers. The introduction of airport-managed premium lounges and the expansion of dining options highlight the airport's focus on providing a world-class experience for all passengers.
The Mumbai West Wing Adani Lounge stands out as a premier choice for those seeking luxury and comfort, while the repurposed East Wing lounge offers a viable alternative for credit card customers. Additionally, the new restaurant options ensure that travellers have access to diverse and high-quality dining experiences, whether they are flying domestically or internationally.
