India's fuel consumption soared to a seven-month high in December 2023, reaching approximately 20.054 million metric tons, according to data released by the Petroleum Planning and Analysis Cell (PPAC) of the oil ministry. This surge marked a 6.2% increase from November, with a notable 2.6% uptick compared to the same period the previous year.
Diesel, a primary fuel for trucks and commercially-run passenger vehicles, saw a month-on-month increase of 0.9%, totalling 7.60 million tons. In contrast, gasoline sales dipped by 4.5%, reaching 2.99 million tons, reflecting a nuanced trend in the automotive sector.

Recent data from Indian automakers revealed a paradoxical scenario - while sales of sports utility vehicles (SUVs) witnessed a rise, small car sales experienced a decline despite enticing discounts. This divergence suggests evolving consumer preferences and economic factors influencing the automotive landscape.
The infrastructure sector, a crucial driver of economic development, showed robust performance. Sales of bitumen, a key component in road construction, surged by an impressive 12.9% from November. Similarly, fuel oil usage increased by 9.6% in December, indicating sustained momentum in infrastructure projects.
Cooking gas, or liquefied petroleum gas (LPG), exhibited a 5.6% growth, reaching 2.63 million tons, underlining the continued reliance on clean energy sources in households. Additionally, naphtha sales recorded a substantial jump of 27.9%, totalling about 1.33 million tons, emphasizing the multifaceted nature of India's energy consumption.
Domestic Sales Snapshot (in million tons) in December 2023:
Diesel: 7.60 mt
Petrol: 2.99 mt
LPG: 2.63 mt
Naphtha: 1.33 mt
Jet Fuel: 0.72 mt
Kerosene: 0.04 mt
Fuel Oil: 0.57 mt
Bitumen: 0.79 mt
Total: 20.05 mt
Comparing this data with December 2022, the growth becomes evident across multiple fuel categories. Diesel sales experienced a marginal decline from 7.79 million tons to 7.60 million tons, reflecting changing consumption patterns. In contrast, petrol sales remained relatively stable at 2.98 million tons, while LPG showed an upward trajectory from 2.57 million tons to 2.63 million tons.
The November 2023 figures, with a total consumption of 18.89 million tons, serve as a reference point. Diesel sales, at 7.53 million tons, were slightly lower than the subsequent month, while petrol sales saw an increase from 3.13 million tons to 2.99 million tons in December.
Analyzing the broader trends, October 2023 exhibited promising growth with total consumption reaching 19.47 million tons. Diesel sales, in particular, saw a steady climb from 6.99 million tons in October 2022 to 7.63 million tons in October 2023, indicative of sustained economic activity and transportation demands.
Contrastingly, October 2022 witnessed lower overall consumption at 18.58 million tons, reflecting the impact of pandemic-related disruptions on the economy.
The surge in fuel consumption aligns with India's infrastructure development plans and economic recovery efforts. As the government continues to invest in large-scale projects, the demand for diesel and bitumen is likely to remain robust.
This upward trajectory in fuel consumption, coupled with dynamic shifts in the automotive sector, underscores the resilience of India's economy. The intricate interplay between various fuel types and their applications provides a comprehensive picture of the nation's energy landscape, shaping the narrative for future policy decisions and industry strategies.
The nuanced patterns within different fuel categories hint at the complex tapestry of factors influencing India's energy landscape, from consumer choices to large-scale infrastructure projects.
