Dividend is that part of the profit of a company which it pays to its shareholders annually. After paying out the dividend, companies generally reinvest the rest of the earnings in their own growth and other such activities.
The dividend payout ratio gives insights into how much money the company returns to its shareholders compared to how much it keeps on hand to reinvest in growth, pay off debt or add to cash reserves.

It is calculated using the yearly dividend per share divided by the earnings per share (EPS), or equivalently, or divided by the net income dividend. It is in percentage form. A higher payout means the company is sharing more of its profits with the investors.
