What is moving average in a stock?
A moving average, as the name implies is an average of price of a stock that is constantly updated. It is a technical analysis indicator to identify trend direction by simplifying the price data and create a flow line. In short the moving average shows the average price value of a stock over a period of time, usually in form days(10, 20, 50, 150 and 200 days).
The moving average could be long-term or short term. Shorter moving averages are typically used for short-term trading, while longer-term moving averages are more suited for long-term investors. This helps in seeing a trend of a stock easily, i.e. to see in which direction the price of the stock moves, either up or down.
What does moving average indicate?
Most common approach to interpret a moving average is to compare the moving average price with the market price of a stock. The direction and place of a moving average indicate crucial information of the stock price. An upward moving average portrays that the stock price is generally increasing and a downward movement point out that the price of the stock is declining.
A stock price if it is above the long term moving average, an upward trend is seen and a 'buy' signal is generated for the stock. While a 'sell' option is pointed when the price of a stock falls below the moving average.
