If you had not linked your Aadhaar card with your PAN by December 31, there will be some serious repercussions waiting for you in the New Year. Your PAN Card becomes inoperative from January 1 and you will no longer be able to file income tax returns, open new bank, demat accounts or receive tax funds with an inoperative PAN card. However, the good news is that users can reactivate the PAN by paying a prescribed fee.

Other Repulsions
Applying for debit or credit cards, depositing cash at banks or post offices, or purchasing bank drafts and paying orders in cash may not be allowed. Cash dealings beyond certain limit could be rejected and government services will also be affected. PAN and Aadhaar are compulsory for applying for passports, opening bank accounts, and availing subsidies. If someone loses or damages their PAN card, getting a replacement will also be difficult because Aadhaar details are required for issuing a new card.
How to Make PAN Active Again
The good news is that taxpayers can still restore their PAN cards, even after missing the deadline. To reactivate, they must first complete the Aadhaar linking process and pay a penalty of Rs. 1,000. Once the linking request is submitted and the payment is successful, the PAN usually becomes active again within a few days. It is important to note that the penalty fee of Rs. 1,000 applies even after the deadline is passed.
No Extra Time Given
There is no separate grace period for reactivation. Taxpayers are advised to act quickly because the longer they wait, the longer they will be unable to carry out financial and official transactions.
Step-by-Step Process to Link PAN with Aadhaar
To reactivate PAN validity, taxpayers must log in to the Income Tax Department's e-filing portal using their registered account. After logging in, they should go to the "My Profile" section and select "Link Aadhaar" under personal details.
They will then need to enter their PAN and Aadhaar numbers. If the penalty is applicable, they must proceed to the "e-Pay Tax" option. Under "Other Receipts", the payable amount of Rs. 1,000 will appear automatically. The payment can be completed through the bank portal. After the payment is made, the linking request should be submitted.
Acting Fast Matters
Until the PAN is reactivated, taxpayers will face repeated transaction failures, compliance problems, and service interruptions. Linking PAN with Aadhaar not only restores its use but also helps prevent identity misuse and duplication.
Taxpayers who missed the December 31 deadline are strongly urged to complete the linking process immediately to avoid prolonged inconvenience.
