Mother's Day 2025: The world will be celebrating Mother's Day on Sunday, May 11, honoring mothers. Women across the globe take motherhood or maternal bonds as a gift since the role itself is of great significance for the upbringing of not just families but also individuals. Apart from contributing greatly to their families, mothers are also adding their talents, intellect, and expertise to nature, science, and various fields in the world. That being said, financial freedom is also important.
Its no rocket science that savings and investments come as a natural habit to mothers. If fathers are meant to work hard and bring the food and protection at the table for his family, its the mothers who take care of the expenses of daily household throughout the decades-old history that is known. Mothers are natural in knowing where to put their money, where to save and where to spend.

"Mothers don't just save for the family - they often end up saving the family. Thanks to their natural instincts, they're usually the first to anticipate a financial need at home, long before anyone else does," said Santosh Joseph, Co-Founder & CEO, Germinate Investor Services.
In the current scenario, market-related instruments are one of the highest-return-giving investment mechanisms. However, they are sentiment-driven, higher in risk, and often can be challenging to stay invested in. But the market is so vast that there are investment schemes that bring the best of both worlds: less risk and market-driven returns. If stay invested for the long run, chances of making even Rs 1 crore corpus is high in these schemes.
Who are they? One of the most popular is Systematic Investment Planning (SIPs) in mutual fund.
"Every household has that secret stash - maybe in a cookie jar, a rice container, or tucked away in a bank locker - built quietly and patiently by a mother. These savings are rarely touched. They're meant for emergencies, for unexpected moments when the family needs a helping hand." Joseph added.
But here's a thought: what if these savings didn't just sit idle, but also grew? Adding he further said, "While traditional saving methods help set money aside, they often don't help that money grow. Over time, inflation eats into the value of idle cash. But if you invest these same savings into growth-oriented assets - like equity mutual funds - you allow your money to work harder for you."
Let's break it down, as per Joseph:
Saving Rs 15,000 a month means Rs 1.8 lakh a year.
In 10 years, that's Rs 18 lakh
In 20 years, it becomes Rs 36 lakh.
With compounding and long-term equity growth, even modest annual returns can potentially grow your savings to Rs 1 crore or more, he said.

Even if you choose safer, fixed-income options, you'll still build a significant corpus - one that grows and keeps pace with your family's needs. He added, "So, if you're a mother move those hidden savings from the jar to a smart, diversified investment. Because when mothers save wisely, they secure not just today, but tomorrow."
What Are SIPs?
Systematic Investment Plan (SIP) is an investment plan (methodology) offered by Mutual Funds wherein one could invest a fixed amount in a mutual fund scheme periodically, at fixed intervals - say once a month, instead of making a lump-sum investment, as per AMFI FAQs. The SIP instalment amount could be as little as Rs 500 per month. SIP is similar to a recurring deposit where you deposit a small /fixed amount every month.
SIP is a simpler approach to long term investing is disciplining and committing to a fixed sum for a fixed period and sticking to this schedule regardless of the conditions of the market. AMFI has highlighted two big benefits of SIPs:
1. Rupee cost averaging:
Rupee cost averaging, as this practice is called, in a way ensures that you automatically buy more units when the NAV is low and fewer when the NAV is high...e.g., an SIP of Rs 1000 gets you 50 units when the NAV is Rs. 20, but gets you 100 units when the NAV is Rs.10. The average cost for buying those 150 units would be Rs. 2000/150 units i.e. Rs 13.33.
However, it needs to be noted that the Rupee cost averaging does not assure profit, nor does it protect one against investment losses in declining markets. It merely ensures disciplined & regular investment in stock markets, which helps overcome the natural impulse to stop investing in a falling or a depressed market or investing a lot, when markets are buoyant and euphoric.
2. The Power of Compounding
There is a great advantage with long-term investments, namely, compounding which is considered one of the greatest mathematical discovery. To put it in simple words, compounding is when the interest (or income) you earn is reinvested in the original corpus and accumulated corpus continues to earn (& grow). Every time this happens, your investment keeps growing, paving the way for a systematic accumulation of money, multiplying over time.
