Passport and Identity Proof

A valid passport forms the cornerstone of identity verification. NRIs must submit a copy of their valid Indian passport, including pages with their name, address, date of birth, date and place of issue, expiry date, photograph, signature, and any observation pages.

NRI Bank Account in India

For Persons of Indian Origin (PIO) or Overseas Citizens of India (OCI), a valid foreign passport with relevant details is required.

PIOs & OCIs To Prove Non-Resident Status for Indian Bank Accounts

To establish non-resident status, NRIs are required to submit any one of the following: a valid employment, residence, or student visa; work or residence permit; or a continuous discharge certificate and contract letter in the case of seafarers.

PIOs and OCIs must provide either a PIO card, OCI card, or foreign passport with a PIO declaration.

Additional proof, such as expired Indian passports, voter ID, birth certificate, or recent NRE bank account statements, may also be required to establish identity and lineage.

Communication Address Proof

Banks require valid address proof, which can be either overseas or Indian.

Overseas Address Proof: A valid passport, recent bank statement or credit card statement, driving license, employment contract, utility bill, residence permit (for example, UAE Labour Card, Saudi Iqama, or Kuwait Civil ID), or letter from an Indian consulate/embassy confirming the address.

Indian Address Proof: Valid passport, voter ID, permanent driving license, Aadhaar card/letter, or job card issued by NREGA are commonly accepted.

PAN Card and Tax Compliance Documents

PAN card is mandatory for all NRIs opening a savings account in India. In cases where PAN is unavailable, banks may accept Form 60. Foreign Tax Identification Numbers (FTIN) and FATCA/CRS compliance details are also required, especially for online account applications.

Photographs and Signature

Recent passport-size colour photographs and a signature (physical or digital) must be submitted to complete the application process.

Document Certification / Attestation for Overseas Applications

NRIs applying from outside India must ensure documents are properly certified. Acceptable authorities include: Indian embassies or consulates, registered notary public, judicial authorities such as magistrates or judges, or overseas bank branches with tie-ups to Indian banks. This attestation guarantees the authenticity of documents submitted from abroad and facilitates smooth account opening.
