The Goods and Services Tax Network (GSTN) has announced the extension of the deadline for filing GSTR-1 to April 12, 2024, citing technical challenges faced by taxpayers. This decision comes after users reported difficulties in accessing the portal, prompting GSTN to recommend the extension to the Central Board of Indirect Taxes and Customs (CBIC).
While the GSTN has officially communicated the deadline extension on their website, the CBIC has yet to issue an official notification confirming the extension. Despite the lack of formal confirmation from CBIC, the GSTN portal reflects the revised deadline of April 12, adding to the confusion among taxpayers.

Bimal Jain, founder of A2Z Taxcorp LLP, a reputable tax and business consulting firm, disclosed insider information indicating that CBIC is likely to comply with GSTN's recommendation. However, Jain emphasised the importance of awaiting an official communication from CBIC before considering the extended deadline.
In line with Jain's statement, Advocate Apoorv Phillips, Senior Associate at Sirmacs Consultancy, emphasized the absence of any notification from CBIC as of April 12, 2024, indicating that the deadline remains unchanged until an official announcement is made. Phillips reiterated the significance of adhering to the original deadline until further clarification is provided by CBIC.
The extension of the GSTR-1 filing deadline is particularly crucial for taxpayers, as failure to meet the deadline incurs late fees. The standard deadline for monthly filers is the 11th of the following month, while quarterly filers must submit their returns by the 13th of the subsequent quarter. However, with the technical glitches experienced on the GSTN portal, taxpayers are facing uncertainties regarding compliance and potential penalties.
Given the financial implications of missing the deadline, taxpayers are eagerly awaiting clarity from CBIC regarding the status of the deadline extension. Until an official notification is issued, taxpayers are advised to exercise caution and continue efforts to file their GSTR-1 returns within the original deadline to avoid any penalties or legal ramifications.
The technical issues plaguing the GSTN portal underscore the ongoing challenges faced by taxpayers in navigating India's complex GST regime. Despite efforts to streamline the tax filing process, recurring technical glitches disrupt operations and hinder compliance efforts, posing significant challenges for businesses across the country.
The delay in issuing an official notification from CBIC highlights the need for improved communication and coordination between government agencies to ensure seamless implementation of tax policies. As taxpayers grapple with the uncertainty surrounding the GSTR-1 deadline extension, the onus is on regulatory authorities to provide timely updates and guidance to mitigate the impact on businesses and facilitate compliance.
While GSTN has extended the GSTR-1 filing deadline to April 12, 2024, pending CBIC confirmation, taxpayers are urged to exercise caution and await official notification before assuming the deadline extension. The lack of clarity underscores the challenges inherent in India's tax system and emphasizes the need for improved communication and coordination between stakeholders to enhance compliance and mitigate disruptions.
