Your credit score is one of the most important indicators of your financial credibility. Whether you're applying for a loan, planning to get a new credit card, or looking for better interest rates, lenders evaluate your credit score before making a decision. But did you know you can check your CIBIL score online for free, once every year?
Thanks to a directive by the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), all major credit bureaus are required to provide one free credit report and score annually to every Indian citizen. Below is the complete guide on how to check your free credit score in India and how to keep it healthy.
What Is a Credit Score?
A credit score is a three-digit number that ranges from 300 to 900, representing your creditworthiness. A higher score indicates responsible credit behavior and increases your chances of securing loans with better terms. In India, the most widely used score is the CIBIL score, issued by TransUnion CIBIL.
For ratings 750 and above is an excellent credit score. From 700-749 is a Good credit score. While from 650 to 699 is a Fair score which may need to improve. Lastly Score below Below 650 is a Poor credit score
Lenders rely heavily on this number to determine whether you're a reliable borrower. Hence, checking your score regularly is a must.
How to Check Your CIBIL Score for Free: Step-by-Step Guide
Here's how to perform a CIBIL score check online for free using the official CIBIL website:
Step 1: Go to www.cibil.com and click on the "Get Your CIBIL Score" section.
Step 2: Provide basic details like your full name, mobile number, email address, and proceed to the next step.
Step 3: Enter PAN Card Details as your PAN number is essential for generating your CIBIL score. Make sure the details match your credit records.
Step 4: You'll be asked Credit-Related Questions about your past loans and credit cards to verify your identity.
Step 5: Next step is account verification, you should check your email for an OTP and verification link. Click the link and set a new password.
Step 6: Log in again with your new password, complete the contact details, and submit.
Step 8: Your CIBIL dashboard will now show your credit score and complete credit report. You can download it as a PDF.
How To Get A Healthy Credit Score
Achieving and maintaining a healthy credit score takes time, but with consistent financial habits, you can steadily improve your standing. One of the most important things you can do is pay your EMIs and credit card bills on time as it is the biggest factor influencing your score.
It's also important to keep your credit usage under control. Try not to use more than 30% of your total credit limit. High credit utilization can signal financial stress to lenders, even if you're making your payments.
Having a good mix of credit types can also help. Combining secured loans like home or auto loans with unsecured credit like credit cards shows you can manage different forms of credit responsibly.
Another smart move is to avoid applying for too many loans or credit cards within a short span as it can negatively affect your score.

CIBIL Score vs Other Credit Scores: What's the Difference?
While CIBIL is the most well-known credit bureau in India, other bureaus like Experian, Equifax, and CRIF High Mark also offer valid credit reports. Each agency may have slight variations in how they calculate the score, but all use similar parameters such as repayment history, Outstanding debt, Credit mix, Duration of credit usage and Credit inquiries. You can check your Experian credit score online or download a free Equifax credit report just like you do with CIBIL.
