Mexico Violence Rises as El Mencho Death Triggers Advisory for Indian Nationals

Fresh violence in parts of Mexico followed reports that Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as "El Mencho", was killed on February 22nd. After unrest spread, the Embassy of India in Mexico issued an emergency advisory for Indian nationals. The warning covered residents and travellers near affected states, as security operations and road blockages continued.

Authorities reported disruptions across several regions, with transport and daily life affected. Roadblocks and vehicle fires were reported in Jalisco. Shootouts were recorded across more than five states. Guadalajara saw major disruption, and some flights to Guadalajara and Puerto Vallarta were cancelled. Residents in impacted zones were advised to remain indoors.

The advisory asked Indian citizens in specific areas to shelter in place. The locations included parts of Jalisco, Tamaulipas, Michoacan, Guerrero, and Nuevo Leon. The guidance remained in effect until further notice. The Embassy also shared basic safety steps for those in these zones.

El Mencho raid details as Embassy of India in Mexico monitors situation

El Mencho led the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG) and was reported killed in Tapalpa, Jalisco. Reports said Mexican armed forces raided a hideout early Sunday morning. El Mencho and six cartel members were fatally injured during the operation. El Mencho died while being airlifted to Mexico City. Three Mexican soldiers were wounded.

As Reuters reported, U.S. intelligence agencies assisted in the operation. The U.S. had offered a $15 million reward for information leading to his capture. After officials confirmed El Mencho’s death, retaliation was reported in multiple states. The U.S. Embassy in Mexico urged American citizens to remain indoors amid escalating violence.

Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum stated that authorities were working to restore order and maintain normalcy. The Embassy of India in Mexico advisory remained focused on immediate personal safety. Indian nationals in the named states were asked to limit movement and keep contact with family and friends while the security situation developed.
