The CNG prices in Delhi are mainly dependent on the prices of natural gas which is abundantly available in some foreign countries including Russia, the United States of America and OPEC (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries). Compressed Natural Gas or CNG is a fuel which is obtained by compressing natural gas and mainly contains methane in it. As CNG is procured from foreign markets it is priced in terms of dollars. The base price of the natural gas which is procured from the sources is dollar-linked and hence the entire input price is totally dependent on the value of the U.S. Dollar versus the Indian Rupee. A rise in the value of the dollar makes domestic CNG prices soar up and vice-versa. The CNG is used as a traditional gasoline/internal combustion engine for automobiles. The CNG rates in Delhi will be revised on a regular basis by the gas distributors in India. Indraprastha Gas Limited is the main distributor of CNG/PNG in Delhi city.

About Compressed Natural Gas

Compressed Natural Gas or CNG as it is commonly referred to as is one of the odourless, clean and a non – corrosive gas which can be used as a fuel to run all types of vehicles. It is one of the cheaper, cleaner and more efficient forms of alternative fuel which has a vast range of uses.

The CNG is made by compressing the natural gas which mainly contains methane to less than 1% of the volume that it occupies at the standard atmospheric pressure. The compressed natural gas is usually stored and distributed in hard containers at a high pressure of 20 – 25 Mpa. The CNG is generally stored in a spherical or cylindrical-shaped container.

People are increasingly becoming aware of environmental pollution and its after-effects on nature and on the human race. To help the earth from getting further polluted, most of the countries in the world are modifying the automobile engines to enable them to use CNG instead of traditional fuels like diesel and petrol. Natural gas vehicles are highly used in Iran followed by the Asia – Pacific region and also in Delhi, the national capital of India.

The high rate of pollution in the city of Delhi has forced the residents of the city to switch to natural gas-run vehicles which in the long term will help the city to decrease the pollution to a great extent.

Benefits of Compressed Natural Gas

The following are the benefits of using Compressed Natural Gas:

• It is the most cost-effective fuel available in the world and is much cheaper when compared with diesel and petrol.
• The CNG gas burns cleaner and emits less carbon-di-oxide when compared with traditional fuels like diesel and petrol.
• The CNG is a gaseous form of fuel and it mixes evenly and easily in air.

• In case of a leakage, CNG does not pose any kind of danger to the nearby environment or it does not contaminate the groundwater since the fuel is non-toxic in nature.
• The vehicles run using CNG move quietly and this leads to lesser noise pollution.
• CNG increases the life of the lubricating oils and it does not contaminate the crankcase oil.
• The carbon monoxide gas emitted by burning CNG stands at 44 per cent against the 80 per cent emission of carbon monoxide when petrol and diesel are burnt.
• The cost incurred to buy CNG is comparatively less when compared with the prices of petrol and diesel.
• The flammability rating of CNG is in the range of 5% - 15% which makes it less flammable and safer when compared with other kinds of fuels.
• The greenhouse gas emission due to the burning of CNG is comparatively less when compared with burning traditional fuels.

Indraprastha Gas Limited

The Indraprastha Gas Limited was initiated in the year 1998 and it took over the earlier Delhi City Gas Distribution Project in 1999 from GAIL (India) Limited. The high level of pollution in the national capital has led the government to increase awareness among the residents to rely more on Compressed Natural Gas vehicles over petrol and diesel-run vehicles.

The project was initially started to distribute natural gas in the National Capital Territory of Delhi for domestic, commercial and transportation sectors.

Today, most of the transport sector uses Compressed Natural Gas run vehicles. The domestic and commercial sectors are using Piped Natural Gas. The industrial establishments are using Re Gasified Liquefied Natural Gas (R-LNG).

The Indraprastha Gas Limited continues to cater to the rising demands of the Compressed Natural Gas, as the growing demand for CNG based vehicles in Delhi is picking up gradually.

The growth of more people switching to CNG variant vehicles and the Delhi government’s directive to make all the LCVs in Delhi run on CNG have helped Indraprastha to expand its operations across the length and breadth of the national capital. The company is currently in the mode of expanding its operations across the city by increasing compression capacity by adding more stations.

Disadvantages of CNG

Though CNG has its list of advantages, it does come up with a list of disadvantages for the users. Let’s take a look at it

Limited Availability – The availability of CNG is limited in several cities except for Delhi. One may not find many fuel stations meant for CNG and may find it tough to find in a few states as well.

Boot Space – CNG will occupy the entire boot space in hatchback cars. In the case of sedans and MUVs, one has to let go of the boot space to a great extent to get the CNG cylinder fitted inside the car.

Decreased Performance - The power delivered by the usage of CNG is less compared to that of petrol. Hence many people opt for petrol-driven vehicles over CNG ones.

Short Range – A CNG cylinder will have less capacity compared to a petrol tank. Hence, the car can travel for a shorter distance with a filled-in CNG cylinder. One may end up visiting the CNG stations quite often to get the cylinder filled up and wait in long queues for securing the gas.
